Why fit comes before everything else

Most foot pain blamed on cushioning is a fit problem. A shoe that is too narrow will hurt no matter how much foam sits underneath it, and no amount of midsole technology compensates for a last that is the wrong shape for your foot. That is why these guides lead on measurement rather than on features.

Two things are worth knowing before you read any review, ours included. Width letters are not standardised — a 2E from one brand is not the same volume as a 2E from another, so check each brand's own chart rather than assuming the letter transfers. And feet change through the day: they swell under load, which is why a shoe that fits at 9am can be painful by mid-afternoon. Measure in the evening, not the morning.

We can't measure your feet for you, and we don't put products through wear testing. What these guides do is give you the method, so you can judge a spec sheet yourself instead of taking anyone's word for it — ours included.
