Best shoes for knee pain

Cushioning that reduces impact load.

Everyone (3) Men's (2) Women's (1)

Knee pain has many causes and most of them are not footwear. Shoes are worth considering as one contributing factor, not as a fix.

Where footwear plausibly helps is in reducing the impact travelling up the leg, and in correcting excessive inward roll that changes how load reaches the knee.

What to look for

  • Well-cushioned midsoles for road and hard-surface use
  • Stability features if you also overpronate
  • Replacing shoes before the midsole is fully compressed

What to avoid

  • Minimal or zero-drop shoes while symptoms are active
  • Running shoes kept well past their mileage
  • Treating a shoe purchase as a substitute for proper assessment
